Yet another short 20 minute drive to the north of Kihei will take you to another universe of possibility on the island known as the West Side This area is home to what used to be the old capital of Hawaii.the town of Lahaina. The 3rd most populated place on the island, the name means cruel sun Probably has something to do with the fact that Lahaina is almost always perfectly sunny and calm (ie almost zero wind) This makes for perfect beach and bathing weather, but can be a little warm indoors (during peak summer time) without air conditioning in the heat of the day. Lahaina is world famous for the diverse and interesting historic Front Street With all the old world charm you expect from a bustling whalers town, but today its full of world class shopping, restaurants and amazing art galleries.
