Living in Haiku
Haiku gets more rain than the resort side of the island, which is why everything is so green. Plenty of residents start the day at Hookipa or Baldwin Beach, and Paia town, with its restaurants and shops, is a short drive down the hill. Haiku has its own small center too, with a post office, a few places to eat and the old Haiku Cannery building.
Life here is quieter and more spread out than in town. Expect narrow country roads, roosters in the morning and a longer drive to Kahului for big shopping and the airport.

Water and Wastewater
Some Haiku homes are on county water and others rely on a private well or catchment. Most use a septic system or cesspool rather than sewer, so budget for a proper inspection.
Permits and Ohanas
Rural homes often picked up a studio, an enclosed carport or a second dwelling over the years. Confirm what was permitted with the county before you count it as living space.

Why do some Haiku listings show a unit letter?
Many Haiku lots have two homes, often a main house and an ohana, set up as a CPR so each one can be sold on its own. The MLS lists each home with a unit letter like A or B, and they are still single family homes.
How far is Haiku from Kahului Airport?
It depends on where in Haiku you are, because the area is so spread out. Lower Haiku near the highway is closer, while homes up Kaupakalua Road or out toward Huelo take noticeably longer. Drive it at the times you'd actually travel before you buy.
