Maui is the second largest island in the chain at 727 square miles. It is 48 miles long and 26 miles wide at it’s widest point. The most recent census placed the population at approximately 150,000 full-time residents. Wailuku is the seat of Maui County and is located right next to Kahului (where the airport resides). These larger towns are on the East windward (meaning windy!) side of the island. Here you will find all the big box stores, like Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Costco etc. They are not big for tourist attractions, but they are the hub of business and government for the county of Maui.
A short 20 minute drive from Kahului to the South West side of the island you will find Kihei with Wailea and Makena a bit further to the south. These areas represent the second most populated area on Maui and one of the most beautiful and frequented on the islands. Since these places are directly in the “shadow” of the mountain called Haleakala, they receive very little rain and are always sunny and bright almost every day of the year. People come from all over the world to enjoy the white sandy beaches of Big Beach, Little Beach, and Keawakapu just to name a few. Yet another short 20 minute drive to the north of Kihei will take you to another universe of possibility on the island known as the “West Side” This area is home to what used to be the old capital of Hawaii….the town of Lahaina. The 3rd most populated place on the island, the name means “cruel sun” Probably has something to do with the fact that Lahaina is almost always perfectly sunny and calm (ie almost zero wind) This makes for perfect beach and bathing weather, but can be a little warm indoors (during peak summer time) without air conditioning in the heat of the day. Lahaina is world famous for the diverse and interesting historic “Front Street” With all the old world charm you expect from a bustling whaler’s town, but today it’s full of world class shopping, restaurants and amazing art galleries. Perfectly out of the way of the craziness is the oceanfront “505” an historic village like shopping plaza (located at 505 Front St.) complete with one of the best Luau’s in all of Hawaii, known as “The Feast at LeLe”
The West side is also home to the world’s first master planned resort community – Kaanapali. It sits along a mile of beach that is arguably the best on the planet. Napili and Kapalua are just a touch further to the north and offer some of the highest end beach and resort real estate in the entire island chain. As you move north from Lahaina into these areas, you notice a pleasant and distinct increase in the breeze cascading around the west Maui mountains creating the perfect ocean climate.
One of the most unique and beautiful aspects of Hawaii is the mountains. Most tropical islands in the world don’t offer massive 10,000+ foot peaks as an intimate back drop to your view while surfing or swimming in the ocean. Not only are these mountains an awe inspiring view from below, but they also can be an amazing place to visit and live. Welcome to what is known as “Up Country” complete with ranches, cowboy’s and rodeos. The open grassland and pine forests of these mountains is truly unique and inspiring. The up country is home to some of the world’s most elite and famous artists, actors and business giants. The towns of Kula, Makawao, Haiku and Pukalani (just to name a few) offer some of the most unique environmental living conditions in the world. If you prefer the live at 1,000 or 3,000 feet, you choose. Known as the most perfect weather on earth, you can enjoy endless views of the ocean while riding your Paint horse down to the beach or ride your road bike to check for snow on the summit!
