Welcome to Wailuku located just to the northwest of Kahului. The two economic, cultural and
historic centers of the Valley Isle will definitely be important to your Maui experience whether

 Some places to visit and take the Rediscover Wailuku Tour include
Kaahumanu Church, Bailey House, HalekiĘ»i-Pihana Heiau ancestral sites, and the Iao Theater.
To the northwest of Wailuku just minutes away, there is the magnificent Iao Valley and Iao
Needle where ancient Hawaiian chiefs battled for control of Maui and where many are buried on
sacred ground.


There are plenty of parks, huge monkey pod trees, and many businesses from auto repair to
furniture stores you will visit in setting up your life on Maui. It is a place with more affordable
real estate, plus it is surrounded by sprawling neighborhoods of everything from single family
homes, townhomes, to condominiums and even some land to build on, not to mention
commercial office space and light industrial parks for your business. And there is plenty to do
here and affordable, less touristy eating establishments, nearby golf courses, the Maui Historical
Society, and you can even go bowling. The population is diverse and most who live and work on
Maui most likely live in Wailuku or neighboring Kahului. There are a couple of beaches like
Waiehu Beach Park near the golf course of the same name, but if you are a beach person there
may be better possibilities in places like Sprecklesville or Paia on the north shore or the
oceanfront/beach communities on the more expensive lee side of the island like Kaanapali,
Kihei, or Wailea.

Some folks live in less expensive areas like Wailuku and then invest in
vacation rental properties in tourist areas to offset their cost of living.
Wailuku is perfect for folks looking for quick access to Maui’s only larger metro area, Kahului,
for shopping, and the all-important OGG airport. Costco, Target, and Whole Foods are just 15-20
minutes by car. Neighboring Kahului has two shopping malls, all the major automobile
dealerships and repair shops, movie theaters, University of Hawaii Maui College (2 yr), the Maui
Arts and Culture Center just to name a few reasons to locate near Kahului. All just a short drive
from Wailuku.


Wailuku has some great schools of its own: St. Anthony is a Catholic school with preschool
through K12 with a very favorable student to teacher ratio. Hawaii Technology Academy Public
Charter School Maui in Wailuku is a highly rated, public, charter school. Henry Perrine Baldwin
High School is a public high school that is well established and highly rated. There are several
elementary schools including Wailuku Elementary known for its stone architecture and high
standards.


Wailuku has the largest medical facility on the island, Maui Memorial Medical Center, making
living here very convenient for doctors, nurses and many other medical professions and support.
If you need quick access to medical care, Wailuku and nearby neighborhoods would be the place
to shop for your next home.

A short ride through Kahului and you are soon on the Hana Highway and an easy drive to
spectacular waterfalls and nature trails all the way to Hana through quaint Paia. The Haleakala
Highway through Kahului will get you to all of Kula’s popular destinations like wineries and
lavender farm and on to Haleakala National Park for phenomenal sunsets and sunrises. Then, the
Honoapi’ilani Highway goes right from Wailuku and soon you are in Kihei, on your way to
Wailea. Or head north through the “Pali” named for its scenic cliffs and oceanside whale
watching (January to March) and you will be on the “Westside” beaches, Lahaina, Ka’anapali,
and Kapalua. All a short scenic drive from Wailuku.


There are not many condos in Wailuku compared to Kahului or more touristy areas. Puuone
Towers and Puuone Terrace near Puuone Plaza Shopping Mall offer some more affordable units
compared to other more popular locations.


Kehalani is a planned community just south of Wailuku worth checking out. It has condos at
Kehalani Gardens, Villas at Kehalani, and Iliahi. There are about 2400 single family homes with
Kehalani Village Center for local shopping. The elevation is higher and West Maui Mountains
shade the area for cooler temperatures making its parks, trails and bike paths more enjoyable.
Nearby Waihe‘e has a rural residential setting about a couple of miles north of Wailuku with a
very popular neighborhood golf course and a beachfront that is picturesque although a bit rough.
Waikapu Gardens is an affordable housing development with some very nice single-family home
possibilities.

Search all homes, land and condos for sale in the Kahului,and Wailuku MLS. These are neighboring cities on Maui and their real estate is prized for its central location. Kahului and Wailuku are the heart of Maui and the towns are a industrial, civic and commercial hub. Both are only a 5 minute drive to the airport. They are home to several large shopping malls, including Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center and the Maui Mall. Although they are not generally considered a tourist destination, Kahului does feature the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum, Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, Kanaha Beach County Park, and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.

     The Hawaii luxury real estate in Kahului and Wailuku is more moderate in pricing, yet spectacular views of the ocean, beach and mountains are still stunning and available. If location to the normal amenities of a larger town are important to you, yet still centrally located to the beach and mountains, Kahului and Wailuku are very much worth checking out.
